Exploring Kew Gardens

My fiance and I took a trip to Kew gardens during the February half term and I thought I would share my love of photographing plants with a bit of an overview of Kew as a day out. I studied Ecology at university and therefore really do love a good bit of plant action. I was in my element walking around the Two large Victorian greenhouses and I know how lame that sounds. I enjoyed taking pictures of leaf patterns, textures and the variety of colours. I felt that I could block out all my internal chatter and just focus on something creative which I hadn't done in a long while. I especially enjoyed the palm house as I love tropical plants best as well as having a bit of warmth during a very chilly day out! My partner really enjoyed walking through the grounds as he loves more natural woodland settings. The daffodils were starting to pop out too! We booked tickets to go to the orchid festival and it was amazing seei...

The human condition - getting out of the labyrinth

We constantly search or strive towards something. We cannot help but set goals. Maybe its our human condition to strive to be the best . As cavemen we had to strive to be the best hunter to compete with others to survive. If we survived ... well ... we won. So maybe today our species is at a loss as to how to feed that desire to be the best. No longer is surviving a great enough win for many of us in the western world. But our brains have not changed. It feeds us with the same intensity to chase our own goals as our ancestors did at surviving . Suddenly buying a house or progressing in a career has the same intensity as surviving. The brain cannot adapt to something it has not experienced although its pre-set features still work. One persons stress can be anothers mild inconvenience. Its all perspective. So maybe we find our own measures of success to feed our animalistic brains. We cannot understand the world without goals. We cannot relate to others wi...

Bright

Lately life has been so busy I barely notice the days slipping by. A new job is sapping all of my time and energy but I am getting so much experience and joy out of it that I wouldn't have it any other way. While commuting I have been listening to the 'happy place' podcast by fern cotton and I have really been relating to and being intrigued by some of the thoughts they have been exploring. So much so in fact, that I wrote a poem about it (please see below). I've been interested in the idea of being in control of how we pecieve the world, how we respond and how we feel. I think it's easy to blame 'bad events' or 'bad people' for our moods without taking responsibility for our own wellbeing. I think we forget that how we act and how we speak (even when angry/sad) impacts the world around us. Food for thought I think. Bright Some light flickers,  But seek to shine,  When light holds even,  Emotions are mine We seek constant,  But f...

Unemployed and Unimpressed

Little did I know that one year post graduation I’d be sat on my parents’ sofa, numbing my brain with day time telly and caffeine. Walking to maccas for a now 11am breakfast (highlight of my week) and bribing myself to go on walks via Pokémon Go. Maybe I thought I was something more than the average person when id graduate, that I somehow deserved something better. That I could jump up that corporate ladder but here I sit, unemployed and unimpressed. God what a sob story. I was looking up at the stars last night (Looking for the meteor shower but that didn’t happen… typical) and it just hit me how insignificant I am. Maybe that sounds like I’m belittling my existence. I suppose in some ways I am. But not in the ‘god nothing matters’ kind of way but in the… well… positive ‘ it doesn’t matter’ kind of way. You know? Whatever I do I will still breathe, walk, talk and live (probably). In the grand scheme of things my actions do not influence a great deal of the universe. If I weren’t here ...

Earth Day 2019 - 30 Day Challenge

Hello all and happy Earth day! This morning, while scrolling aimlessly through my social media, I saw a post from WWF that really sparked my interest. I'm always looking for easy ways to do my bit to save the planet and as its earth day, I thought I would share that post with you all (I have linked the article at the bottom of this post if you are interested in reading more). A good quote I read was that 'the way we meet our needs today is compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs...' This is not just about saving the gorillas or rainforests (in which I must say I do feel very passionately about) but also about saving ourselves. We all rely on a healthy earth to provide us with a liveable climate, clean water, food, fuels and soils. By 2050 its predicted that our population will reach 9.8 BILLION and 2/3 of these people will live in cities. In 2018 we used more natural resources in 7 months that the planet could produce in 12 months practically st...

Youtube, meditating, cleaning and painting - The update

Happy Easter all. I’m currently eating waaay too much chocolate and drinking a glass of wine. Like you do. I haven’t done a chatty catch up style blog post in quite a while now so I thought I would sit down and reflect on what I’ve done, how I feel and what I’m loving. I spent yesterday at Queen Elizabeth Country Park and it was GLORIOUS. The sun was out and it was lovely to have a picnic with family and really reflect on what matters. Sometimes life feels like it gets too much and sometimes you just need a packet of crisps, some greenery and a bit of good ol’ sunshine to get things back into perspective. The last few weeks have been very unsettling. The boring adult things really like bills, rent and jobs etc mixed in with an injury to top it all off. I’ve had to be off work and been stuck at home for far too long and have had way too much time to think. Anyone else get that way? Can’t wait to get back to a bit of normality. It’s getting closer to a year since I graduated a...

International womens day: Ensuring future equality in the face of Brexit #FaceHerFuture

Womens' equality has come a long way but it has further to go. The #MeToo movement over the past year has again highlighted gender inequality when it comes to sexual harassment in the workplace and emphasises a need for the strengthening of laws surrounding these issues. Currently only 1/3 of MPs are women and many STEM subjects see similar inequality. We have now entered our second year of gender pay gap reporting and unfortunately the numbers do not equate. In 2017 a report by the world economic forum predicted that it would take another 100years until the gender gap closes. Inequality is seen by many as a problem in the past. But as recently at 1991 rape in marriage was first considered a crime. Fawcett Society is the leading charity campaigning for womens rights in great Britain. They state: 'Our vision is a society in which women and girls in all their diversity are equal and truly free to fulfill their potential creating a stronger, happier, better future ...
