Earth Day 2019 - 30 Day Challenge

Hello all and happy Earth day!
This morning, while scrolling aimlessly through my social media, I saw a post from WWF that really sparked my interest. I'm always looking for easy ways to do my bit to save the planet and as its earth day, I thought I would share that post with you all (I have linked the article at the bottom of this post if you are interested in reading more).

A good quote I read was that 'the way we meet our needs today is compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs...' This is not just about saving the gorillas or rainforests (in which I must say I do feel very passionately about) but also about saving ourselves. We all rely on a healthy earth to provide us with a liveable climate, clean water, food, fuels and soils.

By 2050 its predicted that our population will reach 9.8 BILLION and 2/3 of these people will live in cities. In 2018 we used more natural resources in 7 months that the planet could produce in 12 months practically stealing 5 months from future generations. Imagine how much loss that is over a lifetime.

WWF has highlighted these facts on earth day with the aims to;
1) preserve natural capital
2) support sustainable production
3) consume wisely.

'The planet has taken care of us for 200,00 years so can you for 30 days?'

WWF has set up 30 things to try and accomplish in 30 days to help us all save the planet:

I have looked at this list and condensed it into easy ways that I am going to achieve these goals;
  • Take 2 minute showers - this will help me to save water and electricity
  • Writing this blog post - to help spread the word. Instagram or Facebook how you are contributing with the hashtag #Connect2earth
  • Look into buying seasonal food
  • Donate to a cause - I will be joining WWF (you can adopt an animal for as little as £3 a month or become a member for £5... that's not much more than a coffee!)
  • Go for a litter pick and reconnecting with nature - I will be going to the beach and a country park with my partner to achieve these two goals at the same time!
  • Write a blog post on plastic pollution and sustainable palm oil (look out for these ones coming soon).
I already do some goals listed on the 30 day challenge. I find these easy ways to help the planet;
  • Make sure to only wash full loads of washing and do so on an eco setting
  • Don't litter
  • Eliminate food waste - write a shopping list when you go shopping and eat leftovers
  • Recycle
  • Green commuter- I walk to work
  • Volunteer - I volunteer with the wildlife trust to engage young people in wildlife. There is always ways to help!
  • Food choices - I eat 2 vege meals a week to help decrease the climate effects of eating meat. I really suggest trying to at least do this once a week and I think you would be surprised at how easy it is.
These are just some of the ways you can help and join in on the 30 day challenge! I'd love to hear any other suggestions on how to meet these goals. Use the hashtag #Connect2earth to show how you are helping the planet. Even if you cant do all 30, doing a few is much better than none. Get involved!

Autumn reflection

Happy Monday folks! Where has this last week gone? In fact, how has autumn nearly come and gone! Scarfs, candles, pumpkins, warm drinks and leaves, this time of year is so lovely. This season is always one for getting back into the swings of uni/school work and coming to terms with the fact that summer is now a distant memory, the nights draw closer and the weather gets more and more dreary with each coming day…. Yay? But after a few years of study, I feel like I have got into the balance of life/work but every year September brings around the challenge all over again. With what feels like mountains to do, sometimes the things I enjoy seem to slip. So, having just been set 5 projects all due by December, I thought now would be a good time to outline what I find are the best ways to manage those stressy times but still get what needs to be done… well… done! 1)       Lists – an old but true suggestion. Write everything down. The stress of forgetting something is gone and u

Finding the light within the storm

January was a month of lockdown, isolation and teaching from home. A month of sunrises, walks and reading. Dancing, painting, snow falls and quiet. There was beauty where you looked for it. Moments of calm amongst this storm. The snow bought a welcome relief. Some variety to living so cooped up. It felt lovely to feel such coolness in the air and to see the world looking so bright. I built a snowman and felt my worries slipping away. I enjoyed hot chocolates and cosy blankets. February started off much like January but harder. Days working from home felt filled with stress and worry. Long days slumped over a laptop, grinding teeth and headaches, deadlines and lesson plans. However, it has also been filled with love. Valentines day, walks, yummy food and still more memories from this month to make. I wanted to share a few things that are lighting up my life so far in 2021. We all need to find the light in the storm. I downloaded an app called one second everyday and I really recommend y

Meditations and Mantras

Meditation is a practise that is growing in popularity. It looks to increase calmness and enhance overall health and well-being.  Meditation focuses on the positive connection between the mind and body. It does not look to change you into a different person. It looks to help you to explore yourself more deeply. There are many different types and reasons that people practise meditation but they all have 4 aspects in common; They usually take place in a quiet space. They use a posture that keeps the spine straight whether that be sitting, standing or laying down. They use focus on a mantra, object or the feeling of your breath. They focus on a sense of self compassion when watching thoughts come and go. Meditation has been found to have a positive impact on health from health conditions such as IBS and high blood pressure to mental health conditions. 5 reasons to meditate : "1: Understand your pain 2: Lower your stress 3: Connect better 4: Improve focus 5: Reduce brain chatter"
